What is Alt Text?

  • Alt Text is short for “Alternative Text”.  It is descriptive text that conveys the meaning and context of a visual item in a digital format, such as on a webpage. Alt text is essential to individuals who use text-to-speech or screen readers to access digital text.  Without Alt text, blind and low-vision readers would not be able to access all content on a page.

Where should teachers consider using Alt Text?

  • Alt Text should be considered when choosing or creating: webpages, digital documents such as Word Documents, Google Documents, Google Slides, and PowerPoints.

How is Alt Text beneficial to students?

  • Since screen readers cannot describe images, alt-text is used to help screen readers describe images so that users have the right context and learning experience.
