When to keep your child home from school

* temperature >100°F * headache * stomachache * nausea or vomiting * diarrhea * sore throat * persistent cough * earache * pale or flushed face * rash or infection of the skin * thick discharge from the nose * eyes that are pink, red, swollen, itchy, crusty, and/or have drainage of any type.

If your child had a temperature >100°F or vomited the evening before or during the night, please do not send them to school the next day. Prior to returning to school your child must have a normal temperature (< 99°F) without the aid of fever-reducing medication such as Tylenol, Advil, etc., and had no incidents of vomiting for at least 24 hours. If your child is sent home from school with a fever or for vomiting, you will be reminded to keep your child home the next day. If the symptoms are severe or persist for more than 24 hours contact your child’s physician.

If your child presents to the Health Room with any of the above symptoms, you may be required to pick your child up from school. For this reason, as well as in an emergency situation, it is very important to maintain current contact information and phone numbers with the Health Room.

Please be alert to your child’s health and deciding when it is appropriate to stay home from school. These guidelines are not only in place for the health and safety of your child, but for the health and safety of all students and staff. There are individuals whose immune systems are not capable of fighting off illness easily, and what may be a mild illness to your child could be a life-threatening illness to another.

Please remember these are general guidelines. If you have any questions please contact the Health Room at 240-566-0010. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our school healthy and safe for everyone.

Medications at School

In accordance with FCPS Regulation 400-23 and to keep our students safe, all medications (both prescription and over-the-counter) must be brought to the Health Room by the parent, guardian, or other responsible adult. This includes inhalers which are not to be with a student unless a completed Medication Authorization Form has been received by the Health Room staff and approved by the Registered Nurse. It is a violation of FCPS policy for a student to have unauthorized medication of any kind outside of the Health Room. If you have questions, please review FCPS Regulation 400-23 or contact the Health Room.

REMINDER FOR MEDICATION/TREATMENT ORDERS

The appropriate medication/treatment authorization form must be renewed at the beginning of each school year. Please have the Medication Authorization Form completed by your health care provider.

Be aware of the expiration date on the pharmacy label when bringing the medication to the health room with the new authorization form. School health staff will determine medication expiration by the date printed on the pharmacy label.

Note EpiPens, Diastat, Glucagon and Inhalers have an expiration date printed on the container in addition to the pharmacy label. Therefore the container expiration date must be equal to or exceed the expiration date on the pharmacy label. Please make sure the expiration date on the individual medication container exceeds the expiration date on the label before leaving the pharmacy.

Reporting Illness or Injury to the Health Room

If your child has a communicable disease, please contact the Health Room staff at 240-566-9217 as soon as possible to report your child’s illness and treatment. Monitoring potential communicable disease outbreaks in the school setting is a very important to help prevent further outbreaks. Some of the more common communicable diseases to report are:

* pink eye

* strep throat

* influenza

* lice

* pneumonia

* chicken pox

Please report any significant injuries, concussions, or surgeries your child may have had to the Health Room so we are aware of your child’s health status should your child present to the Health Room. If your child’s injury/surgery results in an activity restriction, please provide this in writing to the Health Room. A parent note is sufficient for a restriction less than 2 weeks. If your child’s restriction will be longer than 2 weeks, a licensed health care provider must provide documentation of the restriction. The Activity Restriction Form can be printed here or provided by the Health Room to outline specific activities your child may/may not participate in.
