Library Media Centers

Most FCPS schools have a media center under the supervision of a professional media specialist. Media centers are used by students for research, computer access, and selecting books. Media specialists offer guidance and lessons in developing information skills, book selection and digital citizenship.

  • Collection Development: Collections in every school are developed by each media specialist to promote an interest in reading at their schools and to support the curriculum. Many items are selected based upon reviews featured in professional journals. Items are age and content appropriate for the school level. If you have questions or concerns about your child accessing media center materials, please feel free to contact the media specialist for your school.
  • Obligations: Most students are allowed to check out materials from their media center. Students are financially responsible for all library materials checked out. Overdue notices are given to students to notify them of their outstanding obligations. All students have online access to their accounts to track outstanding obligations.
  • Online Accounts: To track checked-out items or to request materials online, all students have individual online accounts. Students can use their FCPS login credentials to access this information.
  • Internet Access: Internet access is available in all of our schools. Elementary student access is monitored and usually restricted to pre-screened websites and FCPS subscription databases. Middle and high school students' computer usage must adhere to FCPS Regulation 400-73: Responsible Use of Digital Technology - Students.
