Whittier Around the World - an Invitation
Invitation to Celebrate Your Family’s Culture
We are currently planning for an event here at school on the evening of January 23rd. The purpose of the event is to invite our school community to get to know a little more about each other and to celebrate our students’ families and cultural backgrounds. We have decided to call it Whittier Around the World.
"Whittier Around the World" reminds us that many of the cultures represented in our school are local, national, and also span the globe. It is part of what makes our school a true microcosm of the world at large.
Do you want to share your culture with other families at Whittier Elementary?
We are looking for families to host a table representing the many cultures and heritages that come together to learn at our school each day. You can host alone or partner with another family. We’ll provide you with a poster board to fill with pictures, maps, and information. You get to decide what you want to teach others. Here are just some ideas to get you thinking:
- Showcase traditional/native clothing.
- Serve a traditional food (all food must be store bought, individually wrapped, nut-free and have ingredients listed).
- Share holiday traditions, favorite games, stories and literature, or sports.
- Display flags, artwork, books, and other artifacts that represent your cultural heritage.
- Play music or share your native language.
- Bring a small craft or activity for children to complete.
